Abu Simbel is a temple complex in Nubia. The site contains two temples founded in 1264 BCE by Pharaoh Ramesses II of the 19th Dynasty during the New Kingdom. The temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both temples were relocated from their original mountainside home to 65 metres higher and 200 metres back from the river, in order to protect it against the rising waters of the Nile that were about to result from the construction of the Aswan High Dam.
